Halal frozen food in Austin, Texas

Assalamualaikum,

While I was in Austin, there were times when I was really lazy to pick up my bum to go out for dinner. After spending the whole day at work, I just feel like relaxing on my comfortable hotel bed and basically do nothing. Well, not nothing....I would spend my time gazing at the ceiling and walls....thinking about my family back in Malaysia. It was difficult being away from my family, especially being thousands of miles away from my two children. Well, that is another story altogether....now, where were we? Ahhh....dinner.  So how I skipped going out for dinner? What I did was to stock up boxes of frozen food inside the fridge. I have a microwave oven inside my hotel room....so, that helps.

Being a Muslim, finding halal food in Texas was really a challenge. I got lucky once though. During one of the weekend that I was there, I made a stop at Whole Foods after coming out of the cinema close to my hotel (I watched Oblivion and that movie sucked big time). Whole Foods is relatively similar in concept to Tesco or Giant in Malaysia. But they specialised with organic food. If you are health conscious so that is a place for you. When I was patrolling their frozen aisle, I bumped into a frozen food with halal sign on it! I was like smiling from ear to ear. I’d been to a few hyper markets in Austin but never once I come across one selling frozen food with a halal sign on it. One plus point...that particular Whole Foods store is just merely 5 minutes away from my hotel!

On the same aisle, I came across a frozen salmon. Drooling by just looking at the packaging picture, I decided to check out the ingredients. And you know what? It is ok to consume. There was no haram ingredient. Alhamdulilah.

So, there you go. A Muslim Malaysian trying to survive in Austin. I plan to share in the next couple of weeks some places selling halal food in Austin...Stay tune...

Below is the link to my other post which share other halal places in Austin. It was written in Bahasa Melayu, so I suggest to use Google Translate if you do not understand Bahasa Melayu.
