Done and dusted
I started the year with a bang (no, not a puncture). I covered 603km in January. At that rate, I thought I could achieve more than the 4,000km distance that I set for this year. Memang motivated. Bersemangat. My body was holding well, my fitness was great. I felt that it was achievable to go beyond 4,000km.
But that momentum came to a halt. Covid was the main contributor. Others like health, work, vaccination, lazy, covid quarantine, weather and travel contributed to that as well.
Back in October, I was 1,128km short of a 4,000km. Untuk cover that remaining distance, I need to go out there and cycle roughly 105km every week. Rasa macam tak mampu, tapi cuba ajelah. Kalau dapat ok, kalau tak dapat pun ok. Bermula October tu, saya dah start mix my rides. Kalau sebelum ni saya banyak ride on the road, this time saya banyakkan juga offroad riding. Banyak kayuh di kawasan bendang. Kayuh di bendang ni best, tak stressful sangat bila tak perlu nak share jalan dengan kereta, lori, bas etc. Pemandangan pun cantik, especially sekarang bila bendang menghijau menanti musim menuai. Cuma bila di bendang tu, mata kena tajam dan mesti sentiasa alert untuk mengelak ular. Dah beberapa kali bertembung dengan ular, and once saya nyaris gilis seekor, nasib baik dia tak patuk. Memang tak perasan pada awalnya, last minute baru nampak. Salah diri sendiri jugak la, bila pilih jalan bendang yang kiri kanannya penuh dengan lalang yang meninggi.
Bermula October jugaklah saya kerap buat 30 to 40 minutes rides dalam kawasan taman. My taman ada a 2km loop (well, close to 2km, not exactly 2km). Bestnya loop ni sebab ia partially shaded by trees dan tak perlu berhenti at any traffic light. Kenderaan tak banyak, jadi rasa selamat. Ada a few speed bumps yang landai, jadi tak berapa affect speed. Ada areas with headwind, ada areas with tailwind. Perfect. Loop ni penting untuk my plan for next year. I anticipate that it will be a busy year. Mungkin dah tak sempat nak kayuh pagi atau pun kayuh petang. Plannya nak kayuh di waktu malam, selepas solat Isyak. Cuaca pun sejuk dibandingkan dengan di siang hari. Tapi, my wife tak suka idea kayuh malam ni, bahaya katanya. I kinda agree with her, especially bila ada orang yang saya kenal terlibat dalam kemalangan maut ketika kayuh basikal di waktu malam. Itu pentingnya my night rides hanya di kawasan taman, within that 2km loop. I will not venture outside of that loop. Lampu depan dan belakang sudah dibeli. Reflective strap pun dah ada, hadiah dari JPJ yang tahan saya by the road side untuk bagi sedikit talk on cycling safety beberapa bulan sudah. Yes, I have my doubt with night cycling, but let see how this plan goes.
Now, back to the main topic. Tahun ni alhamdulillah target tercapai. Kalau tengok screenshots of my Strava kat bawah tu (under Statistics for this year and my year-to-date) , memang ngam-ngam jer dapat 4,000km tu. Lebih pun, sikit jer.
Untuk next year, the plan is to hit another 4,000km. Memang anticipating that it will be a busy year, tak banyak free time. Kalau everything smooth, memang teringin nak cuba hit 5,000km. Tapi itu tough la. Setiap minggu kena kayuh hampir 100km. Tak ada rest. Which I think reasonably hard to do and unrealistic. Kita tengoklah macam mana nanti. Janji kayuh.
