Durian Balik Pulau

Assalamualaikum,

Durian season is here again. I always look forward to June. For Penangites, this is the time to feast ourselves with the famous Durian Balik Pulau.
My boss from my previous company was the first guy who introduced me to the famous durian Balik Pulau. He would arrange an annual trip to an orchard in Balik Pulau. We would drive on a really small kampung road, passing through a scary looking Chinese cemetery on route to the orchard. Down at the orchard, we were greeted by this middle age Chinese guy (I cannot remember his name). He would usually prepare for us many types and grades of durians. Mangosteen and rambutan were served as well. The trip was some sort of a team bonding session for all of us. Chatting, eating and having a blast of a time. Since my boss left the company, and I myself left the company as well, the road trip to that orchard naturally stopped as well.

Last weekend, I made a trip to the Durian Cap Kaki stall near Relau. That stall has now become like a default stall if we are looking for durian. My wife and I were craving for Musang King (it is also called Raja Kunyit or D24). We personally think that Musang King tastes the best in comparison to the likes of Ang Heh (udang merah or D175), Khun Poh and others.

You have the option of eating at the stall itself. They provided tables and chairs. The place is all covered, so do not worry if it rains.

They even have a "mini" zoo behind the stall. There is an ostrich, a horse, turkeys and ducks at the "mini" zoo. Suitable for the young ones.

If you need more options, you can head up to Anjung Indah. There are more stalls there. The price can be different between stalls. I got my Musang King from Durian Cap Kaki for RM30 per kg, but it can be as high as RM35 per kg at other stalls. So, ask around before buying.

So, if you are craving for some delicious durian Balik Pulau, June is the right time to pack up and head to Penang.

Selamat makan!
